Quizzes: create quizzes (legacy view)

Introduction

The LMS365 quiz functionality enables you to create and deploy a variety of quizzes as an intermediate or final test.

This article describes how to create quizzes in LMS365 using the legacy method. Watch the video below or scroll through the article. Note that the article contains more details.

NOTE

From the December 2022 release, LMS365 allows you to create quizzes using the original (legacy) method and the new method. For information on using the new method to create quizzes, read this article. The menu route for the legacy method will be removed in a future release.

Where to create a quiz

You can create a quiz in several areas of LMS365:

  • In the LMS365 Admin Center, go to Content > Quizzes.

On the opened Quizzes page, all quizzes in the current course catalog are displayed. Here, you can see quiz name, description (this has been specified), the publishing status, the name of the user who created the quiz (if stated), and date the quiz was created.

From the Create quiz drop-down menu, select Create quiz (legacy view).

Create quiz

  • From the Content section of the Course editing panel of an existing course.

1. In the LMS365 Admin Center > Training Management > select the relevant course to open its Course Management panel.

2. On the Course Management panel, select Manage Course Content.

3. From the Add Learning Item drop-down menu, select Quiz.

4. On the opened Quiz panel, from the Create quiz drop-down menu, select Create quiz (legacy view).

Create quiz as learning item

  • During course creation.

To create a new quiz while creating a course, follow these steps:

1. In the LMS365 Admin Center > Training Management > Create Training.

2. On the Create Training panel, navigate to the Content section.

3. From the Add Learning Item drop-down menu, select Quiz.

4. On the opened Quiz panel, from the Create quiz drop-down menu, select Create quiz (legacy view).

You'll see the notification: "You are about to create a quiz. This will take you to a separate page and all unsaved changes will be lost. Click Save & Continue to save your changes and go to the quiz creation page."

The Save & Continue action creates the course and it becomes fully functional. You're redirected to the Create quiz page so you can carry on editing the course.

If the required fields in the Basic Details section aren't completed, you'll see a warning and you won't be redirected to the Create quiz page.

When you've created the quiz, you'll be redirected to the Content section of the course. The created quiz is automatically added to the list of learning items in the Content section of this course.

To cancel quiz creation, select Cancel.

In all of the scenarios mentioned previously in this article, you go to the Create quiz page to complete the setup of the quiz.

The Create quiz page includes a number of sections, which are described here.

Create quiz form

Quiz Details

Provide basic information about the quiz in the Quiz Details section.

Fields marked with an asterisk * are required.

Title

Give your quiz a title that learners will see on the course home page and in the LMS365 Player. It's possible to create quizzes with identical titles.

Description

Enter a description for the quiz, if required, or other information that may be useful for learners who take this quiz. Learners will see this description on the course home page and in the LMS365 Player. Select the expand arrow to expand or collapse the field.

Quiz Passing Score %

Set the percentage score that learners must achieve to pass the quiz. The value must be between 0% and 100%. A learner's score is calculated based on the quiz points a learner achieves while taking the quiz.

EXAMPLE

You set the quiz passing score percentage as 70%. The quiz consists of eight questions, each of which award points for correct answers. The questions are worth 10, 10, 15, 15, 15, 25, 25, and 30 points respectively. This gives a maximum score for the quiz of 145 points. To pass the quiz, the learner needs to score 70%, which means they must score 101.5 points.

The passing points score calculation for the quiz is:

70% (the quiz passing score percentage) / 100% * 145 (the total number of points available in the quiz) = 101.5 points.

For more information on awarding points to quiz questions, see the Points Awarded section of this article.

Max Attempts

Specify the maximum number of times a learner can attempt to pass the quiz. The default value is one. If you leave the field blank, learners will have an unlimited number of attempts. Learners will see the number of attempts remaining and the maximum number of attempts in the LMS365 Player when starting the quiz and upon completion.

Allow Navigation

Drag this toggle On to enable learners to navigate between questions while taking the quiz.

When Allow Navigation is enabled:

  • Show Score During Quiz automatically becomes disabled. As a result, learners won't see the number of points they've scored as they progress through the quiz.
  • Learners won't see feedback when they submit answers.
  • Submit is available at the bottom right-hand corner of the page. As a result, learners can submit their answers after any question while taking the quiz.

Sharing Options

In the Sharing Options section, you choose where the quiz can be used. From the Shared to drop-down menu, select Shared to Courses or Shared to the Course Catalog.

image_1__28_.png

Shared to Courses

When Shared to Courses is selected, the Choose Courses field opens. Select the courses from the drop-down list with which you want to share the quiz:

  • If you create a quiz directly from within a course, this course is automatically selected in the Choose Courses field. This quiz is automatically added to the Content section of this course and is marked as required to complete the course. You can share this quiz with more courses, if required.
  • If you create a quiz from the LMS365 Admin Center > Content > Quizzes, select the courses with which you want to share the quiz from the Choose Courses field. As a result, course admins can add this quiz to the course content from the Content section of the selected courses.

image_1__29_.png

As a result of the enabled Shared to Courses option:

  • The quiz can be used only in the courses with which it's shared.
  • Admins of the selected courses and course catalog admins can manage the quiz either directly from the shared courses or from the LMS365 Admin Center > Content > Quizzes.

If a course with which the quiz is shared is deleted, the quiz is still available to course catalog admins and the user who created the quiz. Course admins can change sharing options to Shared to Course Catalog or select another course for sharing.

NOTE

If the only course with which the quiz was shared is deleted, the quiz will automatically be shared to the course catalog.

Shared to the Course Catalog

When Shared to Course Catalog is selected, the quiz can be used in all courses in the current course catalog.

As a result, all course and course catalog admins can view, edit, and delete the quiz.

The newly created quiz will be available for all sites in a site collection.

Timer Options

The Timer Options enable you to set a time limit for learners to complete a quiz.

Drag this toggle On to start a timer when learners take the quiz. By default, this option is Off.

When this option is enabled, two additional parameters should be set: Duration and Show Timer in Player.

In the Duration field, specify the time limit for the quiz in seconds, minutes, hours, days, or weeks.

Decide whether you want to display the timer to learners when they take the quiz using the Show Timer in Player toggle.

Publishing

By default, the quiz Published toggle is On. This publishes the quiz when it's created.

The course catalog’s site regional settings time zone is used. To see how to configure the course catalog time zone, read this article.

The default Start Date is the date on which the quiz is created.

Set the period of time you want the quiz to be available to learners by selecting a Start Date and End Date:

  • Start Date. Select the date and time you want to publish the quiz.
  • End Date. Select the date and time you want to unpublish the quiz.

Quiz Questions

From the Quiz Questions section, you can add questions to the quiz in the following ways:

  • Drag and drop a question type to the Quiz Editor section.
  • Add questions from question pools.
  • Add questions via Question and Test Interoperability (QTI) packages.

Group_1__32_.png

Drag and drop a question type

With the Quiz Questions tab selected, you can add questions to the quiz by dragging a question type from the Quiz Questions section to the Quiz Editor. This action opens a quiz question form.

For detailed information on how to create the various types of quiz questions, read this article.

Add questions from question pools

The LMS365 Question Pool is a repository of questions that can be used by all quizzes.

To add a question from the Question Pool:

1. In the Quiz Questions section, select the Question Pools tab.

All the question pools are displayed. You can use the filters near each column to narrow your search.

2. Select the question pool that contains the questions you want to add to the quiz. Drag and drop the question pool to the Quiz Editor.

Group_1__26_.png

3. On the opened Questions from Question Pool form, select the method of choosing which questions will be added to the quiz: Fixed or Random.

  • If you select Fixed, you should select the checkboxes of the questions you want to add to the quiz. To select all questions in the question pool, select the checkbox next to the Question Title column heading.

NOTE

If a quiz has already been created with the Fixed type, any further changes made in this question pool won't affect the existing quiz.

image_495__3_.png

  • If you select Random, random questions from this question pool will be added to the quiz and you don't need to manually select questions. In the Total Questions field, enter the number of questions you want to add to the quiz.

NOTE

If a quiz has already been created with the Random type, any further changes made in this question pool will be applied to all existing quizzes.

If you select Random, learners will need to answer the specified number of randomly chosen questions from the question pool. Different learners will be asked different questions when they take the same quiz and learners won't see the same questions if they retake the quiz.

image_1__34_.png

4. To search for questions you want to add to the quiz, you can filter the questions in the question pool.

When you apply filters for the Fixed type, select at least one relevant question from the filtered results to proceed.

  • In the Points fields, set the minimum and/or maximum points values that a question should score to filter the list. Only questions with the set value points will be presented in the filtered result.
  • In the Tags field, enter tags that a question should have to filter the list. To filter questions that have any of the specified tags, select Include Any. To filter questions that have all of the specified tags, select Include All.
  • Use the filter icon near each column and select the relevant values to filter the column.

image_495__2_.png

5. Select Save to add the selected questions to the quiz. Alternatively, select Cancel to cancel the action or Reset All to reset the selection. The filters aren't reset if you select Reset All.

Once the questions from the question pool are added to the quiz, you can manage them from the Quiz Editor.

If you select the Fixed type, the questions in the Quiz Editor are displayed as separate questions that can be individually managed. Any changes applied to questions via the Quiz Editor won't affect the question pool.

If you select the Random type, the questions aren't shown in the Quiz Editor as separate questions but as a separate group of questions with the question pool title, as shown in the following image. In brackets, you can find the number of questions from this question pool that are used in the quiz. Selecting Edit opens the Questions from Question Pool page. Here, you can't edit the individual questions, but only adjust your settings on the Questions from Question Pool page. Selecting Delete deletes the entire group of questions. The changes made here won't affect the question pool.

Add question via QTI packages

Select QTI Import to import the following types of questions from Question and Test Interoperability (QTI) packages: multiple choice, multiple answers, true or false, ordering, matching, hot spot, gap fill, short answer, and free text answer.

IMPORTANT

LMS365 supports QTI packages with XML version 2.2. We strongly advise you to use the Mozilla Firefox browser to import QTI packages that include mathematical expressions in their questions.

Group_1__27_.png

To add questions from a QTI package to a quiz:

1. In the Quiz Questions section, select QTI Import.

2. From your local device, select the QTI package you want to upload. If the version of the selected package isn't supported, a validation message is displayed and you can't upload it.

Once imported, questions are added to the Quiz Editor.

3. Edit, delete, or reorder the imported questions if required, then continue with the quiz create/edit process.

If any questions can't be imported (for example, the question type isn't supported), you'll see a message that shows all Skipped Questions. This section can be expanded.

Quiz Editor

In the Quiz Editor, you can add, edit, delete, and organize the questions you want to include in the quiz.

image_1__37_.png

  • Drag and drop the questions you want to add to the quiz from the Quiz Questions section to the Quiz Editor.
  • Reorder the questions in the quiz using drag and drop.
  • Edit questions by selecting the Edit10-17.png icon.
  • Delete questions by selecting the Delete10-19.pngicon.

Create quiz

When all the necessary fields are completed, select Create to create the quiz.

Group_1__33_.png

If a required field is empty, you'll see the notification "The field is required." near the relevant field and the quiz won't be created.

If you select Return to Quizzes before the quiz creation is saved, you're warned that the information you've entered may not be saved. Proceed by selecting OK or discard by selecting Cancel.

If you created the quiz from within a course, when the quiz is created, you'll be redirected to the course in edit mode.

If you created the course from the LMS365 Admin Center > Content > Quizzes, when the quiz is created, you'll be redirected to the Quizzes pages, where the new quiz is displayed.
